THRIFTING

Shop with purpose!

With climate change dawning on us like a horror movie (which we’re watching with our eyes closed), a ‘Use and Throw’ mentality isn’t in anybody’s best interest. The fashion industry is amongst the largest contributors to the world's economy and, not to mention, landfill waste! Things go out of fashion even before we know they were in. With the constant need to be up to speed with all kinds of new trends, Thrifting and Flea markets can be a way out of spending a fortune on apparel. To avoid harming the environment, Renting and the unavoidable new trend of ‘Capsule Wardrobes’ can also be seen amongst the possible solutions.

It’s no secret that India is still struggling to accept this trend of renting and accepting hand-me-downs. But the trend is in and it’s growing.
Designer and branded clothing are desired by all but not everyone can afford it.
Thus, Renting is like the Knight-in-fashionable-armour to the rescue. Influencers, Bloggers, and YouTubers have also recently started encouraging renting apparel.
You can rock that best friend’s wedding in a designer outfit without burning an elephant-sized hole in your pocket.
Numerous rental and thrift stores online like Flyrobe, Stage3Social, Date the ramp, ThriftedThis provide a variety of collections from various designers at unbelievable prices!

Public opinion on Thrifting shows us what it truly means to Bangaloreans.

Krishna Priya , a 20-year student shares her views on the topic. “I started thrifting 3 years ago, I found a thrift shop in Dubai and was really really surprised about how I could get really nice clothes at such affordable rates so I kinda jumped into finding thrift shops in India soon after. I love that there is an entire huge community for thrifters and thrift shops online, especially on Instagram. That's the main platform for thrift shops here.” “Thrifting is a much better way to shop, honestly at this point I think thrifting should be a common method or alternative method of shopping that's well known. It’s great because not only are you indulging in sustainable clothing and sustainable methods of acquiring material, you get it at affordable prices. You get good quality clothing, especially for younger populations who don't necessarily have the means to buy clothes at high prices regularly. As a non-working student, it's so much easier for me to thrift than sacrifice lunch for one top that costs ₹800.”

When asked if Thrifting should be embraced as a trend in Bangalore~ “Opening thrift shops are a really good way to start a business and a really nice method for people to make money when there aren't enough job opportunities in the current economy. Bangalore has a growing student population and so thrifting would be a great way to keep our expenses down and also get nice clothes.”
In conclusion, KrishnaPriya added, “Overall I think thrifting should become more normative since it's a really good way to reduce unnecessary wastage of resources.”

#thrifting is trending

The benefits of accepting pre-loved and swapped items are numerous. Apart from reducing the carbon footprint it also helps bring down the amount of textile manufactured and shipped to stores. It’s a trend that keeps giving!
